Take a Chance On You

Meochia, aka MJ, is an SMH Mentee who plays volleyball for her High School Junior Varsity team. MJ started playing in junior high. She keeps practicing and gets better each year.

You cannot always wait for someone to choose you. Sometimes, you must be your biggest fan and advocate and take a chance on yourself. It takes a lot of bravery to lead a team, but it takes just as much courage to get into the game. Don’t be afraid to get out there and play. You will make mistakes; you might fumble the ball and miss quite a few times, but the point is that you try and keep trying. Practice what you love until you become really good at it and are satisfied with your performance. Nobody ever played in a game sitting on the sidelines. They were either on the bench waiting to get in or on the floor or field, making it happen. Everyone on the team is important to the squad. Make sure you cheer your team on. Encourage each other and be a great Sport. A great attitude gives you lots of latitude. It’s true that somebody has to win and somebody has to lose, but confidence makes you a winner every time, so choose yourself and do your best!
